Advanced Field Methods Seminar, post meeting update

Today's info meeting regarding this summer's Advanced Field Methods Seminar in Oaxaca went really well. About 12 of us were in attendance as Dr. Carleton gave us a quick rundown on what the project is about, how it works, what to expect, and what the requirements and costs are.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to do some meaningful and amazing work. Not to mention the experience and resume-boon. I'm super motivated to learn more Spanish now! Netflix will help, as will turning on dubbed and/or subtitle tracks on everything watched on the DVD player from here on out. Spanish talk radio in the car, and podcasts through iTunes. Only seven months left to train my ears to the sounds of Mexico.

If you'd like to discuss the project, head over to the LGSA Fledgelings Google Group...we've already started a topic or two on this!

New additions!

We now have a calendar and a discussion board!
A few things:
  • You must be a member of the Google group to visit the discussion board and add posts or comments. Please click on the "Sign in and apply for membership" link and one of us will approve it.
  • This requires a Google account. If you use gmail, reader, iGoogle, Picassa, Blogger, GoogleTalk, or are already a member in another Google group, then you already have a login you can use. If not, well, I can't encourage you enough to sign up. Any one of the above mentioned apps are awesome, but all of them together are quite spectacular.
  • Note the three links at the top of the calendar pageAcademic | Events | Courses — these will take you to individual calendars for each. Pretty nifty, no?
I'll add more to this list as things come up.

"In Siberia, fewer than 25 elderly people speak Chulym, a language spoken for generations by traditional hunter-gatherers and fishermen in small rural villages. In Bolivia, a language once spoken by healers to the Inca emperor is on the verge of extinction. In the Orissa state in the east of India, younger generations no longer speak Sora, a language of the region with a complex and expressive way of putting words together."
